TikTok and Censorship Debate

Published on 17 March 2023 at 12:49

Censorship has been a topic of debate for centuries. From the banning of books to the regulation of television, governments around the world have tried to control the information that their citizens consume. In recent years, social media has become a battleground for censorship, with platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube coming under fire for suppressing certain types of content. However, the recent ban of TikTok by the US government has raised concerns that the country may be turning towards communism.

TikTok is a social media platform that has gained enormous popularity over the past few years, particularly among younger generations. The app allows users to create short videos, often with music and filters, and share them with other users. However, concerns have been raised about the app's ties to the Chinese government and its potential to collect user data.

In August 2020, President Trump issued an executive order that would ban TikTok in the United States, citing national security concerns. The order required TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US operations to an American company or face a ban. A deal was eventually reached with Oracle and Walmart, but the ban remained in place until the Biden administration took office.

The ban on TikTok has been controversial, with some arguing that it is an infringement on free speech and an attempt to control the information that people can access. Others argue that the ban is necessary to protect national security and prevent the Chinese government from accessing sensitive information. However, the argument that the US government is turning towards communism because of the ban on TikTok is misguided. Communism is a political ideology that advocates for a classless society in which all property and resources are owned by the community as a whole. The ban on TikTok has nothing to do with this ideology.

Furthermore, the United States has a long history of censorship and government control of information. The government has the power to regulate what can be shown on television and in movies, and it has also been involved in the banning of books throughout history. The ban on TikTok is just the latest example of the government's efforts to control the flow of information.

So what does the ban on TikTok mean for citizens of the United States? Some argue that it is a slippery slope towards more government control of information and a violation of free speech. Others argue that it is necessary to protect national security and prevent foreign governments from accessing sensitive information.

Regardless of which side of the argument you fall on, it is clear that the ban on TikTok is just one example of the ongoing debate over censorship and government control of information. As technology continues to evolve and social media platforms become more powerful, this debate is only going to become more heated. It is up to us, as citizens, to stay informed and engaged in this important discussion.
